Healthy Hacks: Healthy Milkshake Bar

Healthy Milkshake

Spring has officially sprung! Our flowers have been blooming for weeks, the grass is almost fully green and the days are getting warmer.

Healthy Milkshake

In the spirit of warmer weather, we’re celebrating by making milkshakes! But not just any milkshake: we’ve taken the traditional shake and made it healthier. This recipe is easy and delicious, too.

Healthy Milkshake

The first thing you need to have for a healthy milkshake is an ice cream base. We bought lactose-free, gluten-free, and GMO-free vanilla, strawberry and chocolate ice cream, because you can make almost any kind of milkshake with those three base flavors.

You’ll also need milk. I had soy and almond milk on hand. You could even make your own almond milk if you’d like, making this recipe even healthier! But store bought varieties are just as good in a pinch.

Next, you’ll need your mix-ins. Since we are going for a healthier shake, I gathered an assortment of fruits for my milkshakes. Bananas, pineapple, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries and cherries are all great options for this recipe.

All-natural nut butters also make great mix-ins for this recipe. We used pre-portioned packages, but you can use your favorite brand of nut butter instead.

Once you’ve got all your mix-ins ready, it’s time to party! To blend these milkshakes, we used the KitchenAid® Torrent™ Magnetic Drive Blender. This Blender is very easy to use, extremely powerful, and blends like a dream. It has a number of pre-set recipe Adapti-Blend™ programs (icy drinks/smoothies, milkshakes, soups/sauces, juice and pulse), allowing you to select the program that best fits your needs.

Add your ingredients to your pitcher, starting with your choice of almond or soy milk, followed by your mix-ins, and lastly, adding your choice of ice cream. Now you’re ready to blend. The Magnetic Drive Technology with MagnaLock™ System secures your pitcher, so you don’t have to hold down a lid like you would on other blenders. For this recipe, turn the dial to the milkshakes program, press the button to turn it on, and leave it to blend away hands-free.

A small alert ‘ding’ signals that the program is complete and let’s you know your milkshake is done.

As you can see, we experimented with a few flavors. My banana split milkshake was delicious and was made with vanilla ice cream, almond milk, a banana, strawberries, pineapples, cherries, and chocolate sauce. My husband loved his chocolate peanut butter milkshake, which he made with chocolate ice cream, almond milk, and peanut butter. We both topped our shakes with whipped cream for a decadent presentation. Mix and match your favorite flavors to make your own version of this recipe.

Healthier ice creams and mix-ins are a great way to lighten up this classic dessert, while still producing a creamy and flavorful shake. And by having a variety of ingredients to chose from, you really can make any flavor combination you want!

Milkshake Base Recipe

Makes 1-2 servings

For a banana split milkshake

2 cups of your favorite vanilla healthier ice cream
1 medium banana
3 strawberries
4 pineapple chunks
3 cherries
2-3 tablespoons of chocolate sauce

For a chocolate peanut butter milkshake

1/8 – 1/4 cup non-dairy milk (add less for thicker consistency)
2 cups of your favorite chocolate healthier ice cream
1/4 cup peanut butter

To make the Banana Split Milkshake, add your milk to the pitcher of your KitchenAid® Torrent™ Magnetic Drive Blender, followed by the banana, strawberries, pineapple chunks, cherries, and chocolate sauce. Lastly, add the vanilla ice cream to your pitcher. Turn the dial on the Blender to the Adapti-Blend™ milkshakes program, then hit start. A small alert ‘ding’ signals that the program is complete and let’s you know your milkshake is done.

To make the Peanut Butter Chocolate Milkshake, repeat the steps above, instead adding peanut butter to the milk in your Blender and topping with chocolate ice cream.

Experiment with other flavors of ice cream and mix-ins to create your own unique, healthy milkshake.
