Lots of people set an intention at the beginning of the year to eat healthy or lose weight, but more often than not after only a few weeks, those habits we’ve been building are kicked to the curb and forgotten. I say this not in judgement, but from experience. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve told myself that January was my fresh start and I was going to totally clean up my diet and detox after the holidays. Usually…I last about a week.
This year though it was a little different for me. Not only did I spend most of 2015 eating plant-based foods, which naturally upped my fruit and veggie intake, but I also started juicing regularly. This made my holidays more manageable and I had a lot less pressure on myself come January.
Why is juicing good for you?
Fruit and vegetable juices are a great way to increase your nutrient intake. Unlike the kinds you purchase at the store, which have usually been pasteurized (which means all the good nutrients have been killed off), fresh pressed juices, like the ones we have here today, are so good for you.
Since the juices don’t have any fiber in them, the nutrients from the fruits and vegetables get carried directly into your bloodstream. It’s like taking a booster shot of vitamins but in a tasty and delicious drink. Juices also support your body’s natural detoxification process and help carry toxins out of your system.
Plus, by using specific detoxifying ingredients, like we do in these recipes, you can add even more to this process!
I was so excited when KitchenAid came out with their Juicer and Sauce Attachment! It’s small, compact and easy to clean. And it’s multifunctional too; it allows you to control the amount of pulp, so you can make a smooth green juice, a pulpy orange juice, and a thick tomato sauce all with one handy attachment!
For the recipes we’re making today, we’re using the low pulp screen which makes the juices completely smooth and removes all the fiber. These detox juices are packed full of healthy ingredients, are 100% fruit and veggie based and are in three delicious combinations.
Detox Juice #1: Purple Love
Ingredients: beets, lemon, ginger
This juice is not for the faint of heart because it tastes a lot like beets! But since beets are on the sweeter side, it does have a nice level of sweetness paired with some zing from the lemon and ginger. All three ingredients are incredibly detoxifying, so this is a great juice to drink in the morning with breakfast or for a mid-morning pick-me-up.
Detox Juice #2: Green Monster
Ingredients: kale, parsley, cucumber, green apple, lemon + lime
This is the perfect green juice because it’s slightly sweet and not too earthy. It gets its sweetness from the apples, but because they are green apples, they are still slightly tangy. It’s a juice that’s packed so full of green vegetables that it’s almost like you’re drinking a salad (and it tastes delicious!). This is a great juice for any time of day, but I love it either before breakfast or to pull me out of the afternoon slump.
Detox Juice #3: Elevated OJ
Ingredients: grapefruit, carrot + turmeric
Don’t let the color fool you – this juice doesn’t have oranges but instead is filled with low-glycemic grapefruit, which is also a fat-burning food; carrots, which are packed with vitamin A; and turmeric, the spice extraordinaire that naturally detoxifies and is an anti-inflammatory, filled with antioxidants. This juice is a great alternative to traditional OJ (which is pretty much straight sugar) and is delicious served next to your favorite breakfast.
How to make juice with the KitchenAid® Juicer and Sauce Attachment
Now that we’ve talked about our tasty juice combinations, it’s time to see just how easy it is to make juice with the KitchenAid® Juicer and Sauce Attachment for the Stand Mixer.
To get started, follow this video to see how to set up the attachment to your Stand Mixer. I chose the Low Pulp strainer. Make sure to open the pulp shoot so the pulp goes into the separate container.
Briefly prepare your vegetables and fruits for juicing. Peel off any hard rinds (especially citrus since they’re pretty bitter) and chop into pieces that will fit in the shoot. I quartered my grapefruit and beets, then halved the lemons and limes.
Turn the Stand Mixer to speed 10. Place the ingredients into the hopper and use the food pusher to slowly feed the items into the juicer bowl.
Then just pour your juice into a glass and you’re ready to enjoy! You can use the pulp in another recipe, compost it or discard it.
