Mini Sweet and Savory Tarts for the Holidays

Mini Sweet and Savory Tarts for the Holidays

With the holidays approaching, it’s time to start thinking about fun food to make for all the parties and get togethers with family and friends. I love making appetizers and small bites for potlucks and parties because it’s fun to experiment with different flavor combinations and they’re generally easy to transport.

One of my favorite things to make are Mini Sweet and Savory Tarts, and I’ve used my KitchenAid® Professional-Grade Nonstick Mini Pie Pan to whip up two delicious tarts that you can bring to your next holiday soiree. I love this pie pan because its nonstick professional-grade construction and removable bottoms make it easy to work with. And the pre-engraved ridges for the crust ensure that all of your tarts and mini pies come out looking perfect!

There were so many fun flavor combinations I wanted to experiment with that I had a hard time deciding what to make. But in the end I chose some seasonal tart recipes that everyone will love – a sweet mini cranberry apple almond tart and a savory bacon, veggie and cheese tart to please all palettes.

Mini Sweet and Savory Tarts for the Holidays

My Mini Cranberry Apple Almond Tarts are super delicious – sweet and tangy with a little bit of crunch, made with fresh cranberries, orange juice, honey, apples, cinnamon and chopped almonds.

First I cooked the cranberries, orange juice and honey together in my 3.0-Quart Saucepan from the KitchenAid® Stainless Steel 8-Piece Set until the cranberries popped open, about 10 minutes. Then I added the apple and almonds into the mixture and let cool for a few minutes while I prepared the tart crusts.

I rolled out the pie dough and cut out 12 (3-inch) rounds,

and placed them into my Mini Pie Pan, pressing gently to form inside the tart pan molds.

Then I added a heaping tablespoon of the apple cranberry almond mixture into the center of each tart round and baked for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees until the crust was golden brown. I let the tarts cool in the pan on a wire rack for 5 minutes, then removed them from the pan and let cool another 5 minutes before serving.

Easy and delicious!

I also made some savory Mini Bacon, Veggie and Cheese Tarts that are great for a holiday brunch or even a small evening get together with friends and family. They’ve got tons of good stuff inside too – eggs, cream, shredded cheese, crispy bacon and lots of fresh sautéed veggies like zucchini, mixed bell peppers, green onion and garlic with a touch of fresh thyme for garnish. This time, I used my amazing, all-purpose 10″ Skillet from the KitchenAid® Stainless Steel 8-Piece Set to cook the bacon and veggies. Then I mixed everything together and poured the mixture into the crusts in the mini pie pan and voila! Delicious crunchy and creamy small bites everyone will love.

First, I whisked the milk and eggs in a large mixing bowl, then added 1/2 cup of the shredded cheese, salt and pepper.

Then, I cooked the bacon in my 10″ Skillet from the KitchenAid® Stainless Steel 8-Piece Set until crispy and brown, about 10 minutes over medium heat. Then I drained and crumbled it on some paper towels and set it aside.

Next it was time to add the veggies. I diced my zucchini, peppers, green onion and garlic, and sautéed them in the same pan for about 5 minutes until soft (but not overcooked).

Then I added the cooked bacon and sautéed veggies to the egg, cheese and milk mixture, stirring well.

Similar to the sweet tarts, I rolled out the pie crust and cut out 12 (3-inch) rounds with a biscuit cutter or glass. Then, I placed the rounds into the Mini Pie Pan, pressing gently to form inside the tart pan molds.

Then I simply poured the egg and veggies mixture into the tart shells and topped them with more shredded cheese. I baked them for 15-20 minutes until the crust was golden brown, the eggs were set and the cheese was melted.

I let the tarts cool in the pan on a wire rack for 5 minutes, then removed them from the pan and let cool another 5 minutes before serving with a garnish of fresh thyme.

These tarts are delicious and so easy to make, and they’re perfect when you want a small bite of savory cheesy goodness!

Mini Apple, Cranberry and Almond Tarts

Makes 12 mini tarts

INGREDIENTS

1 pie crust, defrosted (if using frozen) or homemade
1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
1/4 cup orange juice
6 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 medium apple, peeled and chopped fine (about 1 cup)
1/2 cup unsalted roasted almonds, chopped fine

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a 3-Quart Saucepan from the KitchenAid® Stainless Steel 8-Piece Set, heat cranberries with the orange juice and honey, stirring well and bringing to a boil. Let cranberries cook for 2-3 minutes until they begin to pop open, remove from heat.

Whisk in the cornstarch and cinnamon, return to the heat and cook for another 2 minutes or so, until mixture thickens.

Remove from heat, add the chopped apple and stir well.

Roll out the pie crust and cut out 12 (3-inch) rounds with a biscuit cutter or glass. Place the rounds into the KitchenAid® Professional-Grade Nonstick Mini Pie Pan, pressing gently to form inside the tart pan molds.

Spoon 1 heaping tablespoon of apple cranberry almond filling in to the center of each tart round.

Bake 15-20 minutes until pie crust is golden brown. Let tarts cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Remove from tart pan, let cool another 5 minutes, and serve warm.
